Mark Sexson, a Christian minister and Freemason, the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (IORG) was established in Oklahoma to provide a structured leadership and service framework for young women. Sponsored by Masonic Lodges and Eastern Star Chapters, the organization grew rapidly across mid-century America, particularly in coastal and industrial towns. It operates through local chapters called Assemblies. While it requires a belief in a Supreme Being, it functions as a civic character-building group rather than a church, heavily emphasizing seven core virtues linked to colors: Love, Religion, Nature, Immortality, Fidelity, Patriotism, and Service.

Ritual and Ceremonial Background

The daily operations of an Assembly are strictly governed by a formal ritual book. Meetings take place in a closed lodge room arranged with a specific geometry: officer stations and lecterns form a semicircle around a central altar.

The Stations and Lanterns: Each of the seven virtue stations features a dedicated pedestal light or lantern. The opening and closing ceremonies require the progressive lighting and extinguishing of these lanterns in a exact, unvarying sequence to signal the transaction of business.
