LIGHT THE LANTERNS MYSTERY SONG -  FAQ

Has the lostwave song Light the Lanterns been solved?

A: Short answer, not yet. But much research has now been done to narrow down the era, the area, the style, the personal profile of the singer we are looking for. My conclusions are summarised on Page 7 - Finding the Singer.

What's happening with the Light the Lanterns lostwave search?

A: The search has waned a lot since the early days, but is still ongoing with a few amateur sleuths still looking into leads -- as well as my own in-depth research.

This website is an evolving project. Check back here once in a while to see where things are progressing, or CONTACT me to submit verifiable leads, or if you'd seriously like to help in the areas I am looking.

Who originally uploaded Light the Lanterns?

A: The original uploader of Light the Lanterns was the same guy who first found the cassette tape. His name is Joseph, his band and YouTube channel in 2019 was called Windows to Sky. For full details, read Page 3 - Song Discovery and Search.

Who is Windows to Sky and what is their connection to Light the Lanterns?

A: Windows to Sky is the name of an LA band and their YouTube channel from which Joseph was the original finder and uploader of the mystery song.   For full details, read Page 3 - Song Discovery and Search.

Was the Light the Lanterns cassette tape found in LA or SF?

A: The cassette tape was originally found in LA. For full details read Page 3 - Song Discovery and Search. The recording is believed to have been done in either San Francisco or Northern Cal. at a later date. For the full musical history, read Pages 8, 9, 10, 11.

Is Light the Lanterns a hoax?

A: No. The song-finder was once accused of that some 6 years ago, but he has since been proven authentic and too many facts about the song have since proven it as real.

Is Light the Lanterns about Martha's Vineyard Grand Illumination Night?

A: No, not according to my 5 years of research into the matter. See a quick summary of Why the Martha's Vineyard Grand Illumination Night Has Nothing to do With Light the Lanterns.

Read Page 4 - Decoding the Lyrics to see 9 solid reasons why that myth has now been debunked. Although the web searches and forums are still full of this myth, this is only because the news has not gotten out yet -- and because some people are too afraid to let go of fixed, unfounded opinions on the matter. Decide for yourself after reading Page 4.

Is Light the Lanterns based on the book Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman?

A: No. Alice Hoffman has unequivocally stated that Light the Lanterns has nothing to do with her 1987 novel. She has also said that she finds no relevance in the song to the Martha's Vineyard Grand Illumination Night event which she knows well.

Could Light the Lanterns be a school or university project demo?

A: Partially possible. While the level of musicianship probably rules out a high school project, San Francisco university players during that era may well fit the production profile.

Is Light the Lanterns from the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s?

A: Research evidence now unequivocally points to Light the Lanterns being a song based upon a timeline of interconnected events:

  • 1944 (The Backstory): A World War II shipwreck on a Pacific Island.
  • 1962–1964 (The Lyric Setting): Events taking place in Northern California (the Mendocino/Fort Bragg region).
  • 1968–1969 (The Recording): The actual studio tracking date in the San Francisco area.

In summary, the song is a 1960s example of early "testimonial folk-rock in the distinct genre of The San Francisco Sound." Read Pages 8, 9, 10, 11 which explain the evidence behind this definitive dating.

Did Light the Lanterns originate in San Francisco or Mendocino or Fort Bragg in Northern California?

A: The historical data indicates the song was composed along the Mendocino/Fort Bragg coast between 1962 and 1964, and subsequently recorded in a San Francisco studio circa 1968–1969. Read Pages 3 through 10 for the complete geographic framework.

What does crazy ladies in gingerbread houses mean in Light the Lanterns?

A: "Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses" is the songwriter's colloquial phrasing for the isolated women (the wives of the lighthouse keepers) on South East Farallon Island who lived in stark 19th Century Carpenter-Gothic houses. The term gingerbread houses has no connection at all with the kitsch, electrically-lit houses on Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. Read up on the meaning and evidence behind this statement on Page 4 - Decoding the Lyrics.

Does Light the Lanterns have anything to do with a 1944 Farallon Islands shipwreck?

A: Yes. The lyrical narrative aligns with the wreck of the SS Henry Bergh, the rescue of its 1,400 survivors, and the subsequent anniversary commemorations held by local lightkeepers. For all the historical details, read Pages 4 - Decoding the Lyrics and Page 5 - The Shipwreck and Rescue.

Is the Delpha Atkinson lighthouse family from the Farallon Islands true?

A: Yes. Historical records validate the family history and their direct connection to locations described in the lyrics. Documented facts are laid out on Page 4 and Page 5.

Who was Grace in the Light the Lanterns Chinese restaurant?

A: The Grace Atkinson (born 1906) in the story of Light the Lanterns who got drunk at the Chinese restaurant was the mother of Delpha Atkinson. Delpha was the "She" in the story and who was born on the "magic island" of South East Farallon, in 1927. My thesis proposes -- as yet unverified -- that Grace was the originator and final matriarch of the legacy Illumination Night described in the song. For full details about Grace and her family, read Page 5 - The Shipwreck, the Rescue, The Atkinsons, the Illumination  Night.

What instruments were in the Light the Lanterns mysterious lostwave song?

A:  Lead vocalist, backing vocals, lead guitar, fretless bass guitar, 2 piece drum kit, tambourine. Contrary to popular myths, there was no electric piano, synthesiser, dulcimer, mandolin, or drum machine. A full audio breakdown is available on Page 9 - Instrumentation Breakdown.
